WNP EarShot Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 6, 2026

Overview

WNP EarShot ("the app") identifies music playing near you and sends track information to a What's Now Playing server on your local network. This policy explains what data the app uses and how.

Microphone and Audio

The app accesses your microphone only while you are actively listening. Audio is processed on your device to generate an acoustic fingerprint, which is sent to Apple's Shazam service for identification. Raw audio never leaves your device. The app does not record, store, or transmit audio.

Apple's handling of Shazam data is governed by apple.com/privacy.

Track Information

When a track is identified, the following data is sent to the What's Now Playing client at the host and port you configure. This client runs on your own local network. The app sends track data only to your WNP client and, for the details lookup described below, to Apple Music. No track data is sent to us.

Track Details Lookup

After a track is identified, the app looks up additional details (album name, track number, disc number, release date, composer) by sending the matched song's catalog identifier to Apple Music. The request identifies the song, not you; no microphone audio or personal information is included. On iOS, macOS, and watchOS this uses Apple's MusicKit and asks for your permission the first time — if you decline, the lookup is skipped and the app works normally without it. On Android the app queries the Apple Music catalog API directly; no account is involved. Apple's handling of these requests is governed by apple.com/privacy.

Your WNP Client and Charts

EarShot only delivers track data to the What's Now Playing client you configure. What that client does with it afterward — including the optional submission of your plays to the public community charts — is controlled by your WNP client settings and is covered by the What's Now Playing privacy policy.

Subscriptions

Subscription purchases are processed by Apple (iOS, macOS, watchOS) or Google (Android). We do not collect or store payment information or any information linked to your Apple ID or Google account.

Data We Collect

We do not collect any data. No analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising, no tracking.

Changes to This Policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated periodically, without prior notice, to reflect changes in our practices or applicable laws. When we make a substantive change to how the app handles information, we'll post a notice on the homepage. We'll also indicate at the top of this page when it was last updated.
